Colchester Open Meet 2008 - entries now closed Cards were posted on 14th May, together with a list of any rejections. Amanda is distributing cards to Colchester swimmers. Format Visiting club general enquiries should be emailed to open.details 2007 Open Meet Full results (including top twenty swimmers): The winners of the Reg Baines trophy for the best visiting club were Braintree, with 161.5 points, who narrowly pipped Epping Forest (156.5). Harwich (109) were third, comfortably ahead of Clacton (86.5), Runnymede (61.5) and Witham (54.5). Hosts Colchester scored 456.5. Epping lead the girls' competition with 108.5 points, ahead of Braintree (94.5) and Harwich (83). However, they couldn't match this in the boys' competition, where Braintree (67) and Clacton (65.5) battled it out. Colchester boys scored 254.5 and girls 202. Five swimmers won all their five races, so the best boy and girl awards were decided by the "tie breaker" - the youngest swimmer. The trophies went to Jake Tyson of Ipswich, who also set new records in two events in his 10 year age group, and Eliza Duffy of Chelmsford, also 10, who broke one record. The other three swimmers who swept the board were 11 year old Christopher Palmer of Colchester, who achieved the same feat last year and also claimed two new records, Thomas Rootsey of Colchester, who set one record in the 15 and over category, and Sarah Larner of Colchester. Alice Hickmott of Braintree is our other new record holder, claiming one in the 11 year ago group. |

Colchester Swimming Club enjoyed a tremendous day hosting their 12th Open Sprint Meet and were delighted to introduce their new main club sponsor Griffin Chapman, Chartered Accountants of Colchester. The Club welcomed two of the Partners, Stuart Bennett and Carolynn Pissarro from Griffin Chapman along with swimmers from 13 other clubs to share the excitement of the day.
There were numerous impressive personal best swims, many medallists and record-breaking performances. Colchester's record breakers Chris Palmer and Tom Rootsey along with Sarah Larner each won gold in all five events, scoring maximum points. 12-year-old Chris Palmer set new records in the 100 metres individual medley, smashing the existing record in an outstanding 1.14.67s. In the 50 metres backstroke he broke a longstanding record in an excellent 34.25s. 17-year-old Tom Rootsey stormed to victory in the 15 years and over 100m butterfly breaking the record convincingly with an excellent personal best time of 1.00.50s. Sarah Larner swept the board with excellent wins in all her events in the 14 years age group, with excellent Pb's in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke. Bronwyn Carter 15, achieved four gold's and one bronze medal with excellent personal best times in all events and an impressive 100m freestyle time of 1.04 89s. On tremendous form 12-year-old Evie Thatcher claimed a hat trick of gold medals, with outstanding times in the 100m IM of 1.17.96s and 32.71s in the 50m freestyle. Katie Watson also scored a hat trick, she excelled in the 13 years age group with an incredible 33.43s in the 50m butterfly and 30.53s in the 50m freestyle. Karl Roberts in the 14 years age group achieved four Pb times out of five events taking two silver and two bronze medals, with an impressive 10-second Pb time of 1.15.52s in the 100m IM. In the 11 years age group Megan Boyden had a terrific day with five personal best swims including as exceptional 1.35.75s.100m IM time. Birthday boy 15-year-old Simon Vipond celebrated with a tremendous 100m-butterfly time of 1.12.99s. as well as good swims in all his other events. In the 10 years age group Jim Vickers was on top form swimming strong Pb's giving him bronze in the 100m IM and 50m backstroke and an outstanding 50.59s. in the 50m breaststroke. Tom Illidge also had a good day including an excellent silver medal swim of 47.75s in the 50m breaststroke. Charlotte Marven swam an excellent 50m breaststroke in 54.26s, Charlotte Morgan swam an impressive 49.40s in the 50m butterfly and Niamh Egan swam an outstanding 9-second Pb in the 100 IM in a time of 1.51.00s. In the 12 years age group Alex Vipond took silver in the 50 metres backstroke and achieved excellent Pb's in all other events with a good 1.28.62s in the 100m IM. In the 13 years age group Luke Heptonstall claimed silver in the 50m freestyle with a great Pb of 32.66s. An excellent 44.17s in the 50m breaststroke earned him bronze, he also took bronze in the 50m backstroke. Tom Vickers won gold in the 50m backstroke and added two silver medals to his collection. Grace Sanderson swam a great 50m backstroke to take bronze and Hannah Bain swam an excellent 34.94s. 50m freestyle time. In the 14 years age group Alex Jackson won gold in the 100m breaststroke and swam good freestyle, backstroke and IM races as well as a very pleasing 100m butterfly and Jordan Jago was victorious in the 100m backstroke and took two silver and one bronze medal with great Pb swims. Lucy Tallentire won two silver medals in the 100m freestyle with an excellent Pb, and 100m IM and bronze in the backstroke and butterfly. Emily Storey claimed double bronze with excellent Pb swims in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Matthew Farthing and Robert Ewbank both returning from injury swam well to achieve excellent Pb times with Matthew taking silver in the 100m breaststroke and 15-year-old Tim Tripp swam an excellent 100m butterfly time of 1.17.45s. 16-year-old Oliver Crosby swam consistently well to take 5 silvers and one bronze medal. Also swimming well were Emily Shea-Simonds and Damian Green and achieving excellent top three medal positions were Louise-Jayne Watts, Ellie Tripp, Alice Insull, Katharine Insull and Alex Carter. Colchester scored 456.5 points and the top visiting club presented with the Reg Baines Trophy by Colchester's sponsors Griffin Chapman were Braintree with 161.5. The 'tie breaker' youngest swimmer rule was applied to the five swimmers with maximum points and 10 year olds Jake Tyson from Ipswich and Eliza Duffy from Chelmsford were awarded the best boy and best girl trophies. Colchester's joint chief coaches, Michelle Young and Ian Johnson were very pleased with their swimmers and Vice Chairman Terry Rootsey said, "All our swimmers contributed to a hugely enjoyable and successful day and were a credit to the Club".
