Home galas - help required Many of you may not be aware of the total number of qualified personnel officially required for the correct running of a gala. These are as follows - As older swimmers leave, not all parents continue to help and we always need extra volunteers. Within the above list there should be something to suit everyone and needless to say training will be provided. We are extremely grateful to all our voluntary officials and the level of commitment is entirely up to you. Timekeeping & Judging Courses The Club can organize a short familiarisation course for timekeepers, run at our convenience in Colchester, and the county ASA will arrange for the supply of test papers (all multiple choice format) at the end of the course. These courses are usually run in the autumn. Once qualified the new Timekeepers can do as much or as little on the poolside as they wish. Some may only want to officiate at home for the Club or perhaps at the Club Championships for one or two sessions each year. Others will be keen to travel with the team to away fixtures while some will officiate at the County Championships. Electronics, Announcer or Recorder Training Anyone wishing to become involved with these jobs can make arrangements by speaking to anyone at the Club to arrange gaining the necessary experience at any time, by shadowing these jobs at home galas. PRESS REPORT There was an air of positive enthusiasm following the Colchester Swimming Club AGM. A number of newly elected officers joined other serving members who were re-elected to the Committee and prepare to face the challenges that inevitably come with the running of a Club such as Colchester Swimming Club over the next year. The common goal of both continuing and new members is to work for the good of the Club, supporting the coaching team whose commitment and dedication are outstanding and the swimmers as they continue to develop and progress. The Committee work tirelessly behind the scenes to enable the Club to function and huge thanks are offered to them all, as well as the parents and supporters who also get involved and are always on hand to help out. A special thank you is extended to the retiring committee members some of who have been involved with the Club for too many years to mention. With particular thanks to Mike Coppin standing down as Chairman after 6 years, having been involved in the Club for more than 30 years. Stuart Bennett from the Club's main sponsors Griffin Chapman was present and delighted to congratulate the newly elected ladies and men's captains Denise Young and Thomas Rootsey and vice captains Katherine Roberts and Oliver Crosby. These young people will serve for the coming year providing help to the Coaches at galas and on poolside, representing the club where necessary and supporting and acting as role models for the younger swimmers, as well as training and competing themselves. All involved are looking forward to an exciting and busy year ahead. TREASURER'S REPORT The accounts for the financial year ended 30th September 2007, indicate an in year deficit and an accumulated fund which is less than our desired reserve of 6-9 months pool hire and one years coaching fees. It will therefore be necessary to be prudent during the coming year. At this time last year the Committee took the decision to reduce the reserves held by the Club, and use the funds to benefit the swimmers. Indications were that pool hire would increase significantly, but it was decided to subsidise this increase using the reserves available. ASA fees were also incorporated into the quarterly subscriptions, easing the administration burden on the Club. The introduction of land based training on a Sunday morning has also added to pool and room hire costs. The very successful Open Meet resulted in a profit of £2,787 compared to £4,715 the previous year. The hard work of the Open Meet Committee raised a record £740 in sponsorship. The reduced number of swimmers and spectators resulted in a drop in door receipts, programme sales and, thanks to the huge efforts of Bridget, only a slight drop in raffle ticket sales. The increase in pool hire for the day and trophies also contributed to the reduced profit. This is my last report as Treasurer of the Club, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all committee members for their help during the last few years. I am very grateful to Lisa B for taking on the role, and I know she will be a great asset to the Club Committee. A big thank you to all collectors of membership fees, and to Tim M the Club Auditor. Lesley B JOINT CHIEF COACHES REPORT The tides of time continue to progress with ever increasing pace, and the moment is upon us again to reflect on the past year's activities. Whilst we remain a relatively small club, supported by a large group of voluntary helpers, our activities still remain directed by many of the legislative, administrative and technical policies that surround larger commercial operations. We rely heavily on the input of those voluntary helpers, without whose valued contribution our operation would not be sustainable. We have always resourced our activities from within with virtually no external support until lately this year, when a local company contracted to provide a sponsorship arrangement. "The appointment of Michelle Y as Joint Chief Coach has provided a new dimension to the coaching scene. Her input throughout her short period in post has already begun to impact on the training with the extension and added value to our training portfolio and Club activities" ..... Ian J. Our swimmers have been a pleasure to work with, and continue to exhibit enthusiasm and commitment in an effort to meet their training challenges. This has reflected in their continued progress and personal development. Few other sporting activities offer such programmed and planned training schedules as competitive swimming, and frequently the fitness level of our members have been transferred beneficially to other sporting activities external to swimming. Success and achievement of targets can take many forms, and for our swimmers this has been seen through gala selection, personal bests, distance swims, rankings, training attendance, and completion of training sets. Some notable achievements this year have been Thomas Rootsey's selection for the National Inter-County Team Championships held in Sheffield's International 50m pool. Other members selected for County Team events were Grace Sanderson, Christopher Palmer, Katie Watson, Thomas Rootsey and Sargon Youssefi. Sargon was also selected for the English Schools Division 8 National Team. We still maintain our position in the 1st Division of the London Speedo League, in which our swimmers never fail to acquit themselves well with very creditable performances against a very high standard of competition. We have also now been promoted to the 1st Division of the Junior Speedo League which gives our younger swimmers the opportunity to gain experience with exposure to a very good level of competition. The Club has been represented at County level by a much larger base of young swimmers, who for many this would have been their first experience of County competition, while our older members continue to perform significantly well at County and at District events. Our participation in other competitive events remain extensive with Mini and Junior Speedo League, London Speedo, Trophy and 'B' Grade friendly galas, together with a number of selected Open meets which have seen a very strong Colchester contingent supporting these events. A number of our senior swimmers must be congratulated for their work in assisting with the teaching sessions, and in using their experience and skills developed in competitive swimming for the benefit of others. The Masters continue to maintain a stable base, with some of its members involved in successfully representing the Club in County, Open and Triathlon events with six of its members Julie Jago, Val Standage, James and John Tomlinson and James Heathcote, being selected for the County Team. Roy Young's input into the land training has been a marked success, together with his achievement in qualifying for the World Triathlon Championships in Vancouver, Canada next year is worthy of note. The 50 metre pool at the University of East Anglia, Norwich still provides an excellent venue for long course training experience, and attempts have been made to schedule this into the training calendar. We have a close partnership arrangement with the Colchester Phoenix, the Club for disability swimming, and where possible integrate their members into our mainstream programme. Land training continues when facilities are available at Leisure World. to help compliment the water based programme. Links with Essex University and the their Human Performance Unit continue, but it is with regret that we see David F move to Loughborough University having implemented a programme of sports psychology. Amanda W as Competition Secretary has provided a pivotal role in co-ordinating with the Coaches entries for County, Regional and Open meets. Her efficiency in providing a seamless transition from hard copy entries to electronic, with all its inherent problems, has been much appreciated. The whole operation of our swimming club relies heavily on the voluntary contribution of a vast number of people. The world appears to moves at a progressively faster pace and time is at a premium for us all, and so to all of those parents, helpers, poolside assistants, team managers, teachers, coaches and committee members we would like to extend big a thank you for all of your help and support throughout the year. Any small contribution is much appreciated, and collectively contributes in maintaining a smooth running and cohesive Club. We look forward to the further development of the Club, and in maintaining an environment for our swimmers to maximize their full potential and progress our Club to new heights. Ian J and Michelle Y MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY'S REPORT The membership figures taken October 2007 are as follows:
Presently 88% of members are now on standing order payments, against a target figure of 90%. The remaining 12% receiving quarterly invoices. The Masters' section is at present full to capacity, and I can report that we do still have a number of Masters swimmers waiting to join the Club. Please note that we no longer have the Garrison/Graduation squads. These swimmers (5 in total) were re-introduced back into Seniors or Masters squad, and these squads now no longer exist. As we head on to a New Year, I am confident membership to the Club will continue to be in demand, and membership fees collected through Standing Orders will continue to be a practical and reliable method of ensuring membership payments. Bridget H FIXTURES SECRETARY'S REPORT It has been an eventful and very active year as far as the fixtures are concerned. As forecast at the 2006 AGM the number of Invitation Team Galas has decreased considerably, but the Open Meets have increased. While the Club continues to compete in the three leagues, the balance seems about right. While many of the local Clubs complain about huge gaps in their fixture lists, it is comforting to hear our Coaches pleading that we would love to accept the invitation from whoever, but we do not have any free weekends. The results and performances at the Open Meets have been exceptional, and during the year have given the Club an enviously high profile. Our Christmas Gala held in December was a very enjoyable evening, and this Annual Gala remains very popular. This year the Gala will be held on a Sunday on a date much closer to Christmas, so anything can happen! We continue to compete in the Junior Speedo League, and after competing in the 2007 competition we gained promotion to Division One. This is a just reward for all our young swimmers who have competed regularly over recent years in Division 2 without success. The National Speedo League London remains our prestige competition and after a successful 2006, in this year's fixtures we will be competing against the best Clubs in the Speedo London League. Our first round will be at Hatfield on Saturday 13th October. One of the oldest and very popular leagues where we compete is the Essex Mini-League. Colchester was one of the founder members of this league, and has been supportive of this competition over the years. This year we have enjoyed good results in the five Galas in which we compete. Due to major administration problems in the running of the league no results have been published, and we have not been made aware of final positions. It is hoped these problems will be resolved before the League Annual General Meeting in December. It has been a very busy year and we should congratulate ourselves as to how smoothly all the events have run. Special thanks to all the Team Managers who travel to all the league fixtures, also to Amanda who has handled all the Open Meet entries. Norma C PUBLIC RELATIONS SECRETARY'S REPORT It's been an exciting year for the Club and a new challenge for me as Public Relations Secretary. The beginning of the 06/07 season saw the appointment of Michelle as our new Joint Chief Coach, news I was delighted to report and pleased this proved to be one of my first headlines for the Club. The agreement with Griffin Chapman, our new main Club sponsors, towards the end of the season announced at our excellent Open Meet in May was also cause for celebration and well covered in the local press and on our new notice boards at Leisure World. Most importantly of course it's been a privilege to report on so many of the swimmers terrific performances throughout the year. My biggest challenge with our wonderful swimmers so deserving of a mention, is that there is never enough space to show recognition of all their magnificent personal achievements. The new notice board has gone some way to try and include more swimmers in the coverage, which has been really pleasing. Notable achievements covered this year have included; The 41 swimmers who gained Essex Qualifying times, between them achieving 41 final places at the Essex Age Group Championships. Paige Young was Gold medallist and Essex Champion in her age group in the 50m front crawl and we also had two bronze medallists. 16 swimmers gained East Region Qualifying times and between them secured 12 final places. Sargon Youssefi won bronze in the 50m butterfly and Tom Rootsey achieved 6 final places including a bronze in the 200m IM. Tom was also Essex Junior 100m freestyle Champion at the Essex Junior/Senior Championships and along with Sargon Youssefi, Grace Sanderson, Katie Watson and Chris Palmer was selected for the Essex Team for the Region's Inter-County Gala. Masters swimmer Val Standage achieved an East Region record and Alan Harper former President of the Club a long service award from Essex ASA. We had a lot of success at team galas and Open Meets this year. It was tremendous to report on the teamwork, highlighted particularly by our strong relay performances as well as the positive enthusiasm of our swimmers in attending the numerous Open Meets offered by Michelle and Ian. The continuing challenge is to keep our profile high and persuade the local press that swimming is more newsworthy than football or athletics. I look forward to the inclusion of lots more names and faces in the reports in the coming year and know that our swimmers will not let us down in continuing to produce excellent performances to write about. Chris R COMPETITION SECRETARY'S REPORT ASA Mission Statement: "Every swimmer must have the opportunity to swim in appropriate, quality competition to enable them to achieve their true potential." Over the last year, our coaches have advised our swimmers to enter Open Meets at various levels, and our entries have yet again increased. More of the entries have to be done electronically. Using the notice board and our web pages, has cut down on the preparation time and volume of paperwork, but not numbers of swimmers who enter. Many thanks to Michelle, Ian and Greg for their help. Thanks also to parents, senior swimmers and coaches who help poolside at the many events. They are very supportive to our swimmers. As well as co-ordinating Open Meets, I co-ordinate entries to District and County events. There are four tiers of structured competition. Open Meets are licensed according to the purpose of their competition as Level 1, 2, 3 or 4. Level 1 is aimed at National qualifiers or swimmers close to National times. COMPETITION FOR ALL Amanda W LIFESAVING REPORT We meet each Tuesday during term time at Leisure World in the diving pit from 5-6.30. The first half of the time is spent on dry side activities, Life Support & water safety. At the moment we have 7 members (max. 8), 3 boys & 4 girls. We were very pleased when Danielle Bull & Luke Singleton gained their Bronze Medallion in May. They hope to carry on to gain higher awards. Other members are working towards Lifesaving 1, 2 & 3 awards. Diana H WEDNESDAY IMPROVERS REPORT Classes run for 10 weeks each term from 6.00-6.30pm or 6.30-7.00pm at the Garrison. The new term is well under way with consistently high numbers, plenty of enquiries & a long waiting list. I would like to thank all of the teachers & helpers who have given freely of their time over the past year:- Jill B, Sarah B, Wendy Y, Joe & David G, Rory M, David H, Jackie B (asst. teacher), Stella H (admin.), & Abigail G (helper). After many years of helping Jill has now left us, also Rory, who has gained a place at Cambridge University - well done! Congratulations also go to Wendy & Sarah for gaining their level 2 Teachers qualification. Jackie is now teaching Rory's class and her daughter Danielle helps in the pool with the 1st class. Thanks also to the lifeguards for their assistance. Again it was very pleasing to have two of our top class selected for the Junior Squad. Diana H FRIDAY IMPROVERS REPORT The retention of swimmers remains strong with overall numbers at around 80. We run a system of nine progressive grades from beginners, in armbands, through to advanced watermanship awards. This gives the children a wide base of aquatic fun skills as well as stroke, stamina and speed training. We continue to assess our more advanced swimmers for a standard suitable to promote them to Junior Squad at Colchester Leisure World, and we are pleased to report that, by the end of this year, 6 swimmers will have been upgraded. Thanks go to our willing band of ten reliable teachers who continue to provide a first class voluntary service. Also thanks to the Garrison Lifeguard Team, those teachers who step in to help at short notice and for everyone's flexibility and good will in times of adversity. Chris W MEN'S CAPTAIN'S REPORT It is my pleasure to report on another thrilling year at Colchester Swimming Club from a swimmer's perspective. The year started as it meant to go on, in exciting fashion, with the appointment of the new Joint Chief Coach, Michelle Y. The dynamic partnership made with Ian soon implemented some changes and some fresh ideas kept everyone on the edge of their seats - What would happen next? As the season got going, it very quickly became clear to all that Michelle's fun and approachable style of coaching wasn't going to stop her working everyone incredibly hard. The benefits of this soon showed through, with good results at the Speedo-League galas being an early indication of what was to come. Colchester had representatives at both the Essex Senior and Junior championships, and the equivalent East Region event. This high performance of some swimmers must have inspired others, because after an extremely successful Club Championships in November, and the newly introduced 50s event in December, a record number of swimmers had achieved Essex Qualifying times for the Age Group Championships, which took place through February, March and into April. Before Christmas, swimmers had the opportunity to let their hair down at the first Annual Colchester Swimming Club Disco. It was held at the Arena Sports Centre at the Garrison, and it was, as they say "wicked". Another social event held around this time was the tobogganing afternoon where we visited Ipswich "dry" slope for some fast, (and very wet!) fun. In the New Year, the hard work of a rigorous competition schedule took hold, with the first major competition being the Essex Championships. It was great to have so many swimmers there, as there was always someone to cheer on, or to cheer for you. Numerous open meets followed, with galas interspersed among them for older and younger swimmers, both at A and B-grade. Having been to some of the younger age galas, I have been constantly impressed; not only with the standard of swimming and competitive spirit, but with the excellent attitude many of the young swimmers seem to be developing. The Christmas Gala at Leisure World sticks out for me. Two teams were entered, and it is, to my mind, impressive for a relatively small club to achieve this. Both teams performed well, and it was nice to see swimmers supporting each other, even if they were on the other team. In May, the older swimmers had their chance to swim at the East Region Youth Championships, and the standard was again high, with two medals from Club swimmers, and a number of final places. The "Bagcats" followed, with more young swimmers than ever representing the Club, and, again performing well. In an attempt to improve the performance of Colchester swimmers in long course pools, Michelle and Ian arranged long course training sessions at Norwich. These were repeatedly well attended, despite the immense pain experienced by all during each session! Land training has also continued this past year. For this, thanks are due to Roy, who, in the style of an army drill sergeant, took on the task of getting everyone into shape. Some older swimmers also had opportunities to run with him to improve overall fitness while introducing variety into the training program. To add yet another dimension, we were lucky enough to have David F talk to us about mental conditioning. This was very well received by all - swimmers and parents alike. In summary, the last year has been hard but very rewarding - both in training and racing. Crikey, I'm tired just thinking about it, but even so, the other swimmers and I are certainly ready and raring to go on another hectic and enjoyable year. I'm sure it will be even more successful than the last. Tom R LADIES CAPTAIN'S REPORT I have very much enjoyed the role of Ladies Captain this year. It can be very difficult to juggle swimming commitments and college work, however it has been worthwhile. I have found it rewarding working with the younger swimmers, whom I wouldn't normally meet during training. It has been good to get to know some of them on a one-to-one level, through chatting at galas and other events. I have gained an insight into how the Swimming Club is organised and run, and how we all play a valuable role in the swimming community, working together to achieve success for the Club and as individuals. I would recommend all older swimmers consider getting involved in helping with the Club if they can. Jennie C MASTERS SECRETARY'S REPORT Another year passes and Masters swimmers and Coaches come and go, yet we still regularly maintain membership figures in their 50's.The majority of Masters swim to keep fit in a relaxed friendly environment and Colchester caters well for those swimmers. We also have a small select group of competitors who have success at a range of competitions right through to Regional championships and County selection. As both Masters Rep, and until recently a part of that group, I feel this particular group of Masters could do with a more focused input during training sessions to help them achieve at the highest level, even the oldest engines benefit from some fine-tuning. We have had swimmers this year competing always successfully at Sudbury, the Essex County and Norfolk County Championship and the Eastern Region Championships held at Bury. We have had both relay and individual success at these competitions, with our best result coming from Val Standage who achieved an Eastern Region record in her age group in the 100m backstroke. An outstanding achievement by anyone's standards, and this lady is a pensioner! Our tri-athletes too have enjoyed another successful year, having local team success and individual triumphs both here and abroad. Competing in the Ipswich Duathlon (no swimming!) as a team, and securing first place, were Roy Young, Richie Haines and Stuart Bennett from the club's sponsor. Phil Jarvis came 21st in the sprint world championships (including a 400m swim) in his age group at Hamburg, and Roy Young has qualified for the Worlds next year where he will be competing over the Olympic distances (including a 1500m swim). We have 6 Masters representing Essex at the Regional Championships being held in Colchester on 18th November, they are John and James Tomlinson, James Heathcote Diana Hunt, Val Standage, and hopefully (body allowing) myself. Well-done and good luck to all of the Essex team. Bowing out of competitive swimming after 34 years isn't easy, but I have gained over the years far more than the fitness that now seems to be deserting me. I have a mug that says, "Old swimmers never die they just keep treading water". On that note I'd like to thank my fellow Masters for the support, laughs and camaraderie that have been an essential part of being both the Masters' secretary and a swimmer over the last couple of years. Julie J WATER POLO REPORT Firstly, I would like to say thank you to Craig S for his efforts over the past year. This year has seen us lose a lot of players; Stuart Morgan has moved away with the Army, Stuart White has been unavailable due to work commitments, and Simon Lecomber has had a nasty eye injury, so once again it has fallen upon our stalwart members to guide the team through the year. We are again at the end of the summer season, with the new Winter league dawning on us very shortly. Despite the loss of these valuable players we have produced some very
good displays throughout the year, and have pushed Clacton all the way in both the Eastern and Essex leagues.
With water polo being a non fashionable sport it is important that we look for new tournaments to keep interest up, rather than play the same teams week in week out. We now participate in a tournament in Holland in June where we have been welcomed for the past 5 years. This weekend coming we are playing in a tournament in Bishops Stortford, which we have competed in for the past few years, reaching the final on a couple of occasions. Simon Lecomber and I were members of an Essex select team that beat all the Eastern counties teams also at Bishops Stortford last November. We have now recruited James and Elliot Tomlinson back into our team, and hopefully we can now build around that and encourage as many youngsters as possible to come along and train with us. I started playing when I was 15 when I set up Colchester Junior Water Polo team, it would be great to get something like that started again. Martin V SUPPORTERS' SECTION SECRETARY'S REPORT The end of our year is the time we look back at the positive achievements of the Club. Supporters' Section contributes to these through the help it offers in the organisation of swimming events such as Club Championships and our highly successful Open Meet, as well as support to the swimmers and parents through many other channels, e.g. the running of a Swimshop, the staging of Presentation evenings to celebrate success, and socially through our fun Christmas Gala and Annual Meal. This year has once again been extremely busy for us and has challenged us to constantly find enough help, but we are able to look back on a smooth Club Championships followed by the Sunday Presentations, together with our very popular Open Meet in the Summer. I thank all those who helped throughout the year, but particularly during these events, as they could not otherwise exist. During late Spring we were delighted to co-ordinate our new sponsorship partnership with Griffin Chapman. As you are aware, this has resulted in new Club kit in the form of poolside shirts with newly designed hats. Plans are underway for further items during the course of our three-year partnership. Following the Summer break, and just prior to this year's Club Championships, we have also organised our Sponsor Launch and Awards Presentation. This has officially launched our new partnership, and recognised the great achievements from swimmers this year in achieving Club, County, Regional, National and even International success. However, there can also be negative factors to reflect upon; for a Club our size we relay extremely heavily on the goodwill and time of relatively few individuals, some of whom have been associated with the Club for many years and whose expertise would be sorely missed. It is therefore crucial to the ongoing development and support of the Club, for new help to become involved. Many are often willing to help "while they are there anyway" at a home gala, but this does not begin to account for the huge amount of work which goes on behind the scenes. If this workload was spread amongst many, of course the strain on a few individuals would be a lot less. Most people have a skill or could offer help in some way, however small, for example we have been delighted recently to accept help from a few parents who have volunteered to learn the operation of the new timing equipment, and this year saw a great increase in the number of qualified judges and timekeepers within the Club. These are all "poolside activities", however there are numerous activities essential to the running of our Club which happen away from the Pool. We have many things to celebrate this year, but I feel that we have reached the stage within our Club where we cannot continue to increase the workload of a few individuals, and we must share collective responsibility for our development. Supporters' Section wishes continued success to all swimmers, members and parents. Pearl W HON SECRETARY'S REPORT We have had some significant events in the Club this year, the most exciting of which must be regarding our sponsorship deal, and we have been delighted to welcome Griffin Chapman as our Sponsors for the next three years. I am sure many of you will have seen the recent press report with pictures of our swimmers wearing their new Club T.Shirts. We are now also at the stage where our new Club Constitution is ready to be presented to the Membership for approval, and our thanks must go to Malcolm M for his dedication in battling with all the paperwork involved to get it to this stage. Our Junior Speedo Team has received promotion to Division One of the League, to join the London Speedo League Team, and many individuals have represented the Club at County and Regional level. Ian and Michelle are to be praised for their efforts in coaching our swimmers to such a high standard, and of course the swimmers themselves for putting in all the effort. The Masters have held a high position in the County and Regional events, and again are to be congratulated on their achievements. Sadly, though, we do need a Representative for the Section on the Committee. The Masters Secretary position was created due to demand at the AGM in 2003. It seems such a pity that with such a strong section, no-one is willing to be their Representative. There are many people who selflessly devote their spare time to helping our Club become as successful as it is, and our thanks to all who help poolside in any way - it is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all our Coaches, our teachers, and the Officials. To the Committee - the 'back-room team'. Thanks also to the staff at both Leisure World and the Garrison, with whom we have a close relationship. However, I feel a special mention must go to Mike and Norma C, and to Greg and Pearl W, who put so much of their time and energies into Colchester Swimming Club, and have done so for many years. A lot of work goes into running the Club, but by pulling together we have helped make our Club the success it is. This is to be my last Report as I am standing down as Club Secretary, and indeed from the Committee. I am grateful to Chris R for offering to take on my role, and am sure she will do an excellent job. I would also like to thank everyone for their help and support whilst I have been involved at Committee level, particularly Mike and Norma. The Club has been a major part of my life for the last nine years, (before that I was just a mum and sat and watched!) and I have met some wonderful and truly dedicated people, many of whom, I hope, will be friends for life. Rest assured though I shall still be about, and no doubt helping from time to time, but maybe now I might have time to learn to swim! I wish all involved with the Club every success for the forthcoming year. Judith S |
