This weekend Colchester Leisureworld was once again the venue for the finale of Colchester Swimming Club's annual Club Championships for 2011, with swimmers of all ages competing over three evenings for club records, medals and personal bests. After some tough competition and closely fought racing, swimmers, parents, coaches, officials and guests adjourned to the Presentation Evening. Club President Mike Coppin and Chair Tony Bush congratulated the swimmers on some fantastic swimming, not only at the Championships, but throughout 2011, which has been the most successful year in the 124 year history of Colchester Swimming Club, with record numbers of swimmers competing at the Essex County Championships, Regional and National Championships. Tony welcomed the honoured guests, Stuart Bennett, partner at Colchester Swimming Club sponsors' Griffin Chapman accountants, Jackie Longman, representing the Longman family, who presented the Longman trophy for the Girls' Butterfly, Ray Allan, representing the Allan family, who presented the Gwen Allan trophy, and Liz McCarthy, representing the Dixie family, who presented the new Neil Dixie Memorial trophy for the Boys' Junior Breaststroke. He also thanked all the officials and volunteers, who put in many hours to organise and run the championships, and more importantly the swimmers for their achievements and sportsmanship. A staggering 32 Club Records were broken this year, some of which had stood for many years. 12 year old Laura Stephens claimed an incredible 18 records across four age groups in the 100m Free, 100m Back, 100m Fly, 200m IM, 400m IM, 400m Free and 800m Free. Her PBs in the 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly even broke the Club's Open Age record, with her 100m butterfly time of 1:06.42 being the fastest time for a 12 year old in the UK in 2011. Older sister Emily Stephens set 5 records in the 14 & U age group in the 100m, 200m IM, 400m IM, 400m Free and 800m Free, while 13 year old Pip Davenall claimed a record in the 13 & U 100m Breaststroke and Heather Rodwell put her name to 4 new records in the Open Age group in the 200m IM, 400m IM, 400m Free and 800m Free. The coaching team made two special awards to recognise a swimmer's dedication and personal achievements. The Carol Hart Memorial Cup was awarded to the young swimmer whose dedication, determination and general attitude to training, competition and loyalty to the Club sets a good example to others and this year the award was presented to 9 year old Olivia Norman by Stuart Bennett. The Gwen Allan Trophy is awarded to the Club's highest achiever and Ray Allan was delighted to present the trophy to 15 year old Jarrod Bradfield, whose many outstanding achievements throughout the year included setting 2 Junior Records at the Euro meet, making a final at the National Age Group Championships in Sheffield and selection for the Junior England Talent Programme. All swimmers aged 8 and above can compete in the 11 & U, 13 & U and Open Age 100m races, and here too the swimmers performed extremely well, not only breaking records, but also setting some impressive personal best performances. Among the boys, the gold medals were shared by Antoine Massey (4), Cameron Simpson (3), Jarrod Bradfield (2), Jim Vickers, Spencer Prior and Charlie O'Connor. Joint Head Coach Michelle Young was full of praise for all the swimmers, "We have a great team spirit in the Club and all the swimmers push themselves and their team mates to be the best they can. The countless PBs, Essex County qualifying times and 32 Club Records are a testament to their hard work and dedication". Yet more records fell as Saturday saw the final stage of this year's Club Championships for the swimmers of Colchester Swimming Club, sponsored by Griffin Chapman accountants, as swimmers competed in the annual 50m Sprint Championships at Colchester Leisureworld. Some fantastic swimming saw 5 Club (Open Age) records broken as the Colchester swimmers fought for the final medals of 2011. To be eligible for a medal place, swimmers had to win points by racing all four strokes and the 100m Individual Medley, with gold and silver awarded to the top 2 swimmers in each age group and bronze medals going to all the other swimmers who completed the sprint challenge. In the 12 and under category, Laura Stephens held off a strong challenge from Chloe Rudkin to take the Gold medal, with the ever improving Chloe taking a deserved Silver. Laura broke two Club records in the process - the 50m backstroke in 31.86 seconds and the 50m butterfly in 30.59 seconds. In the 13/14 category, Emily Stephens edged out Philippa Davenall by just 1 point to take Gold, with both girls breaking records as they fought it out. Emily set new records in the 50m freestyle (28.43) and 100m IM (1:09.12), with Pip setting the new 50m breaststroke record in a time of 36.70 seconds. The Boys event was dominated by Jim Vickers to take the Gold medal, with Alex Carter taking the Silver. In the 15 and over age group Katherine Insull secured the Gold medal with Jennifer Redmond taking the Silver just 1 point behind, while the Boys event was even closer, with Jarrod Bradfield and Charlie O'Connor sharing the Gold as they both finished on 23 points. The Grand Finale of the evening was the Girls and Boys "Medley Skins" event, with the 6 fastest swimmers in the 100m Individual Medley keep swimming rounds of 50m, every 3 minutes, with the eliminated swimmer drawing the stroke for the next round, until the last 2 remaining swimmers compete in a final swim-off for the title. The qualifiers for the Skins were Jennifer Redmond, Paige Young, Emily and Laura Stephens, Chloe Rudkin and Philippa Davenall, and, for the Boys event, Dan Few, Harrison Sadler, Jim Vickers, Alex Vipond, Jarrod Bradfield and Matt Lemnell and they out on an exciting series of races for the cheering supporters! The Girls event saw an exciting breaststroke final between two of Colchester's young stars, 13 year old Philippa Davenall and 14 year old Emily Stephens. Pip pulled out a superb turn to take a lead over Emily on the last length and, despite Emily's fightback down the second length, held off her challenge to take the Girls title by just 0.01 seconds. The Boys final was between two more of Colchester's young stars, Jarrod Bradfield and Matt Lemnell, with Jarrod storming back on the second length of a butterfly race to take the Boys title. Well done to all the swimmers who took part in a very tough and exciting night's competition. Club Championships - Records 1993-2011
